The reason that reflection on what happened in the past can be beneficial was summed up by Dr. Carl Sagan, “You have to know the past to understand the future.” So now we take what we know about the past and formulate plans for what we are going to do with our future. Just a few short years ago, most of us had many dreams about our futures. Many of those dreams have changed with new economic forces affecting our lives. For some, the plan to retire has been delayed. Plans to start a career have been delayed for a post-graduate degree. For many, plans for the future now include, in some manner, increasing their personal wealth through saving and investing. A study was published recently in USA Today conducted by American Express Spending & Saving Tracker to answer "How will you save enough in 2011?" Here are the results for the poll: Adults plan to save money by:
Saving a portion of income = 51% This is staggering! Nearly a quarter of peoples' plans to "save" or “build wealth” are to win the lottery! Most people are not going to win the lottery in their lifetime. You have likely seen the small print on lottery billboards. It reads something like “your chance of winning is 1 in some # number of hundreds of millions. And this looks like a good option to a quarter of Americans? According to the study, many investors have completely lost faith in their investment plans because they do not have, or work with, an advisor who has a solid discipline of investing in the financial markets.
