The breakup of AT&T into regional bells is ancient history for investors in the telecom sector. Even the regional telecoms are hard to recall. Technology has changed our lives and challenged the very existence of the telecom sector.
Long gone are the days telling our kids “we are going to call grandma.” Those calls were anticipated and appreciated. Today, they are probably not missed all that much. The old, heavy telephone has been replaced, in part, by cell phones. More likely, we call grandma using Facebook, Skype or FaceTime.
Our new communication preferences have now found their way into the boardroom at Standard & Poors. There are only three companies in the telephone sector. Three companies does not make a market sector nor even an industry. S&P has announced major changes to the telecom sector. The technology sector is being revamped at the same time and will affect investors’ portfolios.
